This comment is about Joyce's Marian Villa Guesthouse in Keel, Achill Island.
NEVER NEVER NEVER go to this B&B! The absolute horror of a woman that is running it does not deserve our money! I'm Irish, from County Clare, and visited Achill with a Slovak friend of mine. We decided to stay the night so went to Marian Villa to enquire as to their rate. The woman who answered the door told us the rate was €45 per person per night. Extortionate. Other B&Bs are charging €25, and this is the most one should expect to pay with the recession. I very nicely asked her if that was her best price as it's 25 elsewhere, she said "45 is our rate GOODBYE" and closed the door in my face! (It was a glass door so she was still glaring at me from behind it). Then she opened it again to say "I don't know where you think you're going with your €25 a night. Maybe 30 years ago! You won't get anything here now. THIS IS A B&B! THANK YOU!!"
Then after another door slamming, added "You could try the hostel!" and when I asked where the hostel was she told me "there IS NO hostel!"
This woman has obviously spent all her life ripping off foreign tourists and felt she could behave disrespectfully towards me because I'm only Irish. Ha ha.
I thanked her for her rudeness, and my friend and I travelled 30 years back in time to Achill Sound, where we found the elusive hostel and happily stayed there for €15 per person per night. The hostel is Railway hostel, just the mainland side of the bridge in Achill Sound. Basic but clean with cooking facilities, what more would you need for €15 a night.
