10 Stunning Flickr Photos of the Gaeltacht
The Gaeltacht regions are the official regions in Ireland defined as where Irish is the spoken language of the communities. The Gaeltacht covers some of the most beautiful scenery in the country, and somehow encompasses the spirit and the atmosphere of the people who live there. Below are 10 amazing photos of the Gaeltacht regions that I’ve picked from Flickr.
1. Ceann Sléibhe, Co. Chiarraí
Slea Head, Co. Kerry which is the tip of the Corca Dhuibne/Dingle Peninsula. It’s one of my favourite places in Ireland, and I recommened Feirm Chinn Sléibhe if you’re looking for a room with this view!
2. Dún Chaoin, Co. Chiarraí
This is just down the road from the previous picture. The sheep wander around and can be quite curious!
3. An Bun Beag, Co. Dún na nGall.
Co. Donegal features some of the wildest landscapes in Ireland, but is also home to many small fishing ports. At those ports, you can grab fabulous fresh fish meals in the local restaurants.
4. Gleann Cholm Cille, Co. Dún na nGall
Home of the Oideas Gael language school, the region in Co. Donegal is named after St. Colm Cille. The area is culture-rich, with strong musical traditions.
5. Corca Dhuibne, Co. Chiarraí
Another picture of the beautiful Dingle Peninsula in Co. Kerry.
6. Corca Dhuibhne
Apart from the sheep’s curiosity, look at those rolling hill in the background across the bay. One of the many views along the Dingle Peninsula.
7. More Ceann Sléibhe
OK, one last Dingle Peninsula for good measure :)
8. Conamara, Co. na Gaillimhe
Conamara (“Connemara”) in Co. Galway often features very brown, barren landscape. This is the largest Gaeltacht in the country, and has a strong Irish-language community. Much of the Irish-based business world is based here.
9. Conamara
10. Inis Mór, Na hOileáin Árann
The Aran Islands of the Galway and Clare coast are three Irish-speaking islands. Inis Mór, featured here, is the biggest of the islands. Inis Meán, the middle island, is the least populated of the three, which is why I’d suggest you’d visit there!
OK, let’s have a bonus! 11. Distant view of Na hOileáin Árann
The photographer here is standing in the Burren, Co. Clare which is not a Gaeltacht region (but the language is relatively strong there, still). In the background you can see the Aran Island. The Burren is a unique limestone landscape, and features a national park.

Beautiful places – would love to go and visit sometime…
Hallo!
thank you so much. You give to as more, than we ask!!!
Your foto – this is the way to anderstand Ireland.
My wife and I visited Limerick last fall … it seems like a lifetime ago. We’ll be back.
Gorgeous pictures – I always remember it lashing with rain during my Gaeltacht days at Rann na Feirste, Co. Donegal though!
I apologize, it’s been taken down. I thought your photos were fantastic and wanted to share them with others, and did give credit. No offense meant.
Méabh, isn’t funny there isn’t one proper “raining” photo here? :)
Lovely. I wen to Connemara as a kid. beautiful place. Pretty easy to get drenched though! :)
Thanks for these gorgeous pictures!
As a boy I used to stay at my grannie’s house in Connemara nearly every summer and travelled a lot along the west coast. Your photography brings back lovely childhood memories…
Glad you liked them, Daniel. Just to be clear, we didn’t take these pictures, it is each person attributed under the photo on Flickr.
I really can’t wait to visit Ireland this June. i’m learning soo much (Irish) languange and we are planning to drive to. i have never left the USA before nor flew in a plane either, so this is a trip of a life time, can’t wait. any ideas on places to visit let me know i’m learning how to read Irish and talk to, just in case i need to. we have found that my ancestry goes back to ireland but who or where i don’t know my madain name in smith
I am intrigued by picture 5 in Dingle Peninsula. The Daily mail during the week had a feature on a picture, I think in USA, where a driver captured “the end of a rainbow” This was described as most unusual!
But this picture seems much better to me – just wondering if this picture was “photoshopped” – if not its a beautiful and unusual image. Great images and beautiful scenery.
@Mike Ya the photo you are referring to is this:

I don’t think number 5 is photoshopped either!
I traveled with my family to Ireland last April, best trip I have ever taken in my entire life! Dingle, the Dingle peninsula, and county Kerry was my absolute favorite part of the trip! I have been to the place in that first picture on slea head drive and have that exact picture! Dingle is just so beautiful and the people are so friendly I can not wait to go back!
amazing, i hope i make it there soon! beautiful!
@tonya, you definitely should. There’s a real magical atmosphere to it.
Excellent work here. Thank you.
For Eoin,
I took photo #5 (rainbow) and it was not photoshopped. I was driving along listening to Eva Cassidy singing “Over the Rainbow” when I saw this. Of course, I had to stop!
Thanks for the nice comment!
@Kathy That’s a great story behind the picture. It’s a good thing you stopped when you did!
